Note: please bear with us, we’re still updating this page.
I’m currently researching microphones and making a plethora of genius drums to record, so I won’t be able to show you the variety of scales I make for a few weeks. Here’s a few demos; feel free to check out any similar makers to listen to what the endless amount of available scales sound like for steel tongue drums. I’ll gladly make any scale or custom request that fits within the range of B2 -> F5.
My current microphones are quite horrible for the task of giving justice to the sound of these instruments. If you want to help us invest in researching other microphones, please check out my gofundme page and take advantage of some store credit and other offers. Any twanginess or lack of resonance in the recordings below is honestly a result of my ineffective mics.
F Big Bear (aka Da Xiong Diao)
F3 A#3 C4 D#4 F4 G4 G#4 A#4 C5 D#5
This is one of our most popular scales. Great for beginners and advanced musicians alike, the Big Bear scale offers rich chord possibilities as well as uplifting and progressive melodies.

Hijaz is one of most well known scales of Middle Eastern music. It embodies deep mysterious qualities and allows for darker expression than most pentatonic Western scales.
E3 F#3 G3 B3 D4 E4 F#4 G4 B4 D5
F# Ursa Minor
B2, F#3, G3, B3, C#4, D4, E4, F#4, G4, B4, C#5
G Deep Harmonic (custom scale)
G3 B3 D4 F4 G4 G#4 B4 C5 D5 F5
I came across this scale in a deep piano trance while I was playing with dark Hijaz and Harmonic Minor scales. It offers a similar sense of mysterious yearning while still carrying a bit of brightness. Surely this scale already exists somewhere in the thousands of years of music theory, but I’ve yet to find it elsewhere.
Double Sided Scales
It’s best for Two-Sided Genius Drums to have complimentary scales in which the notes of both sides sound harmonious while offering a balance of light/dark musical energies. Having some similar notes on both sides adds sympathetic resonance, a phenomenon where hitting one note also strikes it’s twin in a different location, which creates a strong sound healing effect and greater tone. Minimizing the half-steps (flats or sharps as opposed to whole-note differences) between the notes in both scales creates greater harmony for the overall sound of the instrument.
Below are a selection of scale combinations that we think work perfectly. If none of these appeal to the instrument you want, please email us with any requests you may have.
- F Big Bear + C Hijaz
- G Major + E Pygmy
- A# Hijaz + D# N’ogni (scale recordings coming soon)
- F# Natural Minor + F# Ursa Minor
